A monumental engineering feat when it was completed on March 19th 1932, this 1650 feet long bridge is one of the city's most enduring symbols and is affectionately known as 'the coat hanger.' An architectural wonder, the Bridge boasts majestic views the cityscape and harbour. Linking the northern tip of Dawes Point to the southern tip of Milsons Point, there is a tunnel under water that also links the two sides of the harbour. The best way to experience the bridge and its spectacular views is to follow the bridge walkway, accessible via a set of stairs on Cumberland Street just south of Argyle Street in the Rocks. Inside the southern pylon of the Harbour Bridge lies a lookout/museum that illustrates the history of the construction as well as a 200-step stairway to an unmatched panoramic view of the Sydney skyline. It took 1400 workers 9 years to build the bridge and16 builders died in construction accidents. The Bridge takes 10 years and 30,000 litres of paint to coat it. It weighs nearly 53,000 tonnes and has 6 million rivets holding it together.
