The State Library of New South Wales is comprised of the Mitchell and Dixon libraries which house the largest collection of Australiana. These two libraries are housed in separate buildings and are connected by a passageway and a glass bridge. The older library is the Mitchell (1906) which faces the Royal Botanic Gardens. Look out for a replica of one of the_u101 ?arliest maps of Australia illustrating the two journeys made by Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in the 1600's. Beyond the map lies the vast reading room of the Mitchell wing. The newer section of the Mitchell Wing faces Macquarie St, which houses the general reference area open to the public. Beyond the Mitchell Wing is the Dixon Wing, which houses an ever-changing collection of cultural and historical exhibitions. The State Library's major subject strengths are Australian history, culture and literature, including Aboriginal studies, Antarctic exploration, family history and genealogy, business and management, social sciences, applied science, biography, health and law.
