Convicts who had to use chisels in order to turn the stone quarry into blocks constructed this building in 1822 over a period of 20 years. With 23 feet high walls, it housed criminals during the 19th century. Between 1841 and 1908, 67 people were executed in these confines. After serving as a gaol, it became an art school in 1921 and today the Old Gaol is a part of the Sydney Institute of Technology.
