Martin Place is one of the most iconic public spaces in Australia. Sydney's largest pedestrian precint forms the hub of the central business district surrounded by banks and offices. It was made into a traffic-free area in 1971 and is filled with Sydney's workers at lunchtime, especially at the free amphitheatre near Castlereagh Street. Martin Place houses some of the grandest buildings of Sydney, including the re-furbished Commonwealth Bank, and the Venetian style designed Post Office building with its 230 foot clocktower.
