Originally used as an exercise field for troops, Governor Phillip declared this area public land in 1792. It was then used for cricket matches and horse races, before being turned into a park in 1810. Lying in the heart of the city, fountains, statues and tree-lined walks lie throughout the park. A huge chessboard can also be found in Hyde Park where locals challenge each other to a game.Towards the southern end of Hyde Park lies the Anzac Memorial, which commemorates the ANZACS (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) for their services during World War I. The 120,000 stars represent the Australian men and women who served during the War. This dome was opened in 1934 and now includes a military exhibition of war-related photos downstairs. Another popular attraction is the Archibald Fountain. Made of bronze and granite, this fountain represents the alliance between the Australians and the French during World War
