This street contains some of the more historic and interesting areas of the Rocks. Many of the old cottages and houses have been renovated into hotels, restaurants, and shopfronts. There are also laneways off Harrington Street that have fascinating histories.Nurses Walk was a laneway that cut across the area of the colony's first hospital. The name "Nurses Walk' originates from the convict era, when ill patients were brought to the colony. Governor Phillip established a tent hospital where this laneway channelled ships to the nearby hospital. Beyond Nurses Walk lies the old Rocks Police Station on George Street, which dates back to 1882.Suez Canal is another laneway off Harrington Street, which got its name before drains were installed. Rainwater would pour down this canal and into George Street. It was often a place you would find criminal gangs of the 19th century when the crime and robbery rate were very high
